POLICE OFFICER (LATERAL/ ACADEMY GRADUATE)

Salary: $7,218 - $9,673 Monthly

$3,332 - $4,465 Biweekly

Plus an excellent benefits package and additional incentives

Hiring Bonus: $5,000 after successful completion of Field Training and $5,000 after Probationary Period.

Under general supervision, the Police Officer performs a wide variety of patrol and related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. The incumbent makes investigations, assists in the preparation of cases, and testifies in court; serves in specialized departmental roles as assigned. This is a sworn journey-level law enforcement classification that performs all assignments found in a municipal police department. The Police Officer provides information and assistance to the public; performs related work as assigned.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • The equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or higher in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Presently employed by a California law enforcement agency as a peace officer or a graduate of a California POST Police Academy.
  • The ability to convey oneself to and from geographical locations frequently and timely, or possession of a valid CA driver's license.
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.
  • At least 21 years of age
  • CPR and First Aid Certified

The ideal candidate will make sound, independent decisions in emergency situations. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines. The successful candidate will establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Patrols the City within an assigned area in a radio dispatched automobile to secure life and property, observe situations, report suspicious, criminal activity, or hazardous conditions, and deter crime by providing high visibility.
  • Responds to emergency calls for service, disturbances, thefts, burglaries, vehicle accidents, domestic disputes, suspicious activities, and other incidents to protect public safety and property, resolve problems, diffuse situations, and enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Provides information, directions, and assistance to the public in a variety of situations; takes reports and assists the public with complaints or unusual situations.
  • Performs a variety of community policing duties to maintain a highly visible presence within the community for the purpose of deterring crime, maintaining good community relations, and providing assistance to the public, including speaking before various civic and community groups, patrolling assigned divisions by foot, bicycle, or vehicle, and performing other related duties as required.
  • Observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic situations; stops and warns drivers or issues citations as appropriate; assists motorist with inoperable vehicles and arranges for immediate removal of stranded vehicles; provides direction and traffic control in accident or incident situations, special events, or other congested situations.
  • Makes arrests and serves warrants and subpoenas; takes individuals into custody and may transport them for medical clearance and/or booking at a longer-term facility, as required.
  • Secures crime scenes and evidence, photographing and video-taping as required, and processing for fingerprints; interviews suspects, victims, and witnesses; collects and preserves evidence; performs complete investigations and/or cooperates with other law enforcement agencies providing investigative and case development support.
  • Conducts comprehensive investigations into felony and high level crimes as assigned including conducting surveillance activities and coordinating and maintaining crime scene activities.
  • Assists District Attorney staff in preparing, documenting, and developing cases and gathering information; testifies in court as required.
  • Directs the activities of police support personnel and/or volunteers in office and field situations.
  • Provides emergency medical attention to the public when responding to calls for assistance and requests appropriate medical assistance as necessary.
  • Provides mutual aid to other law enforcement agencies as dispatched and in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, logs, records, and accurate files.
  • Serves writs, warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
  • May perform and/or coordinates specific program or projects, including community-oriented policing, school liaison, project and resource development, investigations, crime prevention, and/or field training.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; reviews publications and materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
  • Oversees the use and care of equipment as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience: Specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field is highly desirable. 

Licenses/Certifications:

  • The ability to convey oneself to and from geographical locations frequently and timely, or possession of a valid CA driver's license.
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Possession and maintenance of firearms qualification.

 

Benefits

BENEFITS OVERVIEW: The City offers full-time employees a healthy cafeteria benefits program including choices among plan options for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability. Kaiser Medical Employer will pay 100% for employee and eligible dependents.

Retirement:The City is a part of the CalPERS retirement plan and does not contribute to Social Security. Classic employees – 3% @ 55 formula, with a 2% COLA, 3-year final average compensation, and survivor continuance plan.  In addition, the employee pays .6% of the employer contribution as a cost share.   PEPRA employees – hired after 1/1/13 or Classic employee with a six (6) month break in service are eligible for a 2.7% @57 formula, highest 3-year average compensation.

Leave:Employees earn 120 hours of vacation and 96 hours of sick leave per year.

Holidays: 11 authorized holidays per year, 92 hours holiday in lieu pay for officers and sergeants paid as 3.5384 hours a pay period

$450 of $2,000 educational incentive can be used for approved wellness, including biking/walking gear. Wellness benefits are taxable.

Additional Incentive Pay:

3% of salary for an Associate Degree (AS/AA)/ Intermediate Post Certificate,or

5% of salary for a Bachelors Degree (BS/BA) Advanced Post Certificate, or

7% of salary for a Masters Degree (MA/MS)

2.5% - 5% - Bilingual Pay

5% -  Night Shift Differential

5% - Motor Pay

5% - HNT/SRT Pay

1.5% - 6% Longevity Pay

5% - FTO Pay

$600 gym reimbursement
