Requirements Job Overview This is a Command Staff position in which the incumbent has purview over all Law Center service functions, which may include Patrol, Support and Special Services bureaus. This Police Lieutenant reports to the Deputy Chief of Police or their designee, and works independently with limited supervision. The incumbent, during their tour of duty, may directly or indirectly supervise Sergeants, Communications Officers, Special Police Officers, Security Officers, Student Guards, and may manage contract security. The incumbent may be responsible for managing special events, student guards, and contract security functions. They will provide proximity and exercise delegated authority of the Law Center Command Staff so that critical decisions are made in a timely manner and quality of service is assured. Activities may include and not limited to:
- Supervise, oversee, and coordinate activities of police operations, be responsible for researching, designing and implementing all training and certification requirements for sworn and non-sworn personnel.
- Ensures management and investigation of all special events, training, complaints, crime, accidents, and incidents occurring, reported, or observed on tour of duty in accordance with established policies and procedures, ensures proper and comprehensive reports are prepared, and inspects it for thorough and required information
- Ensures compliance with all departmental operations, procedures, written and verbal directives.
- Ensures subordinates on tour of duty are trained and knowledgeable of all current and pertinent orders.
- Carriers out effective management practices on tour of duty to achieve maximum efficiency. Participates in decisions on matters of employee welfare, evaluation, performance management, progressive discipline and logistical needs.
- Maintains partnership with University students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, other community members, and other government and non government organizations to address and resolve public safety issues.
- Maintains liaison with MPO, DCFD, GERMS, other policy agencies, and other public safety and first responder agencies. Implements and directs emergency operations plans, and coordinates emergency response and management with affected administrators, officials and agencies
Requirements and Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in criminal justice or related field is required
- Practical Experience (years needed and type required): Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible law enforcement experience related to public safety, including at least 2 years of supervisory experience
- Experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures desired
- Previous experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation) is a plus.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of above requirements. Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver's certification
- All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation
- Must also qualify for a Special Police Officer's Commission
- Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Office Suite apps (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable. Administrative and clerical skills are a plus
- Possess intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures
- Must possess tact, patience, a courteous demeanor and pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members. Must respect the use of police power in relation to a University environment
- Excellent verbal and written communications skill, including report writing, are essential
- Working knowledge of electronic reporting systems
- Position is considered as essential under the University Human Resource policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to supervise, evaluate, manage, and motivate subordinate sworn and non-sworn personnel. Possess tact, courteous demeanor and pleasant personality in order to deal with students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries and community members. Respect the use of police power in relation to a University environment. Superior written and oral communication skills required. Emergency management experience preferred. Demonstrate leadership in a higher education environment is desirable

Pay Range: The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$54,616.00 - $100,493.33
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
